I am Prithvi, a 28 year old man. I am a patient at a Psychiatric hospital. I am suffering from lung cancer. Smoking is not as cool anymore as it appeared 10 years ago.  Doctors say I might not be able to see this year's Christmas. Well, it's January at present. Quite a pleasant month for many; not for me. I am not in a psychiatric ward for cancer of course. It is due to the darkness associated with my life that I am here. Darkness has been my favorite shade for quite sometime now. It mingles with my life with ridiculous ease. They call it depression; the doctors.

A girl was transferred to my ward two days ago. Her name is Jane. She is about my age or thereabout. She has a cancer of mysterious origin. Doctors say that she is a case of multiple mutations. They assume that the origin of her cancer lies in her genes. They believe it is due to mutations in some crucial segments of her genetic wiring. There is something strange about her. She does not feel anything, neither good nor bad. Doctors say that it might be due to the anomaly that she has in her genetic chip. They are trying to find out the exact reason behind her strange behavior. They call her 'The Curious Girl' because she doesn't feel either negative or positive about things. She doesn't love or hate; she just remains curious. Patients in the ward think that she's just another crazy girl. I am not too sure if they are wrong!

She came to me yesterday and asked the reason for my hospitalization. I said it is due to the darkness that surrounds me. She replied, 'Darkness amazes me too. The other day I was sleeping and I woke up due to some noise. I tried to find out where it is coming from. Suddenly a rat ran from a dark corner of the room towards the window and the bright rays of moonlight coming from the window fell on it. And there it was; I found the reason behind the disturbing noise. But I could not sleep for the rest of the night. I was taken by the magic of darkness. It is amazing how darkness absorbs the existence of things and turn them to nothingness. I wonder if darkness is as powerful as brightness? I kept on thinking about it the whole night and couldn't stop wondering why. I still wonder!' She stirred my cognitive facilities with her strange thought process.

The Idea: The story is about the strange chemistry of two cancer patients. They are different from each other in every possible way. For example, Prithvi dwells in darkness while Jane is amazed by the mystery of darkness.

What makes the story real - Some relationships  just born out of curiosity. The story captures the chemistry of relationships born out of entirely different perspectives.

  26. It's very intriguing. I feel some people can arouse your curiosity and they let the thought process unwind. She being curious herself, let the infection flow, so to say but in a very nice manner. I love the idea. I like when people find beautiful things in the most unlikely situations, something like this. Hope that december doesn't come for many many more years...
